You may have heard of the term digital footprint, however, have you ever wondered what effects it can have on your life?
«Digital footprint», referring to the data you leave when using the internet, has become a crucial concept in today’s society, including the legal world. Wether it be the websites you visit, the emails you send or the post you publish, a careless track could very much get you into legal trouble.
In less severe cases, such as harassment or implicit content linked to you, it could affect your employment. When applying for a job, most companies will run a background check on you, observing your footprint. If dissatisfied, this can influence their hiring decisions or job dismissal.
The government or law enforcement agents can trace most of the actions you’ve performed on the internet, which may include unlawful activities, such as cyberbullying, scams or identity theft. This may allow them to identify suspects with much more ease and get more used to the criminals mindset.
Once the violations have been discovered, based on the severity of the crime, it is possible to get sued or put on trial. If you have a clear digital footprint, or once investigations have been made, your own posts, emails or online history can and will most likely be used against you. If the opposing attorney does a successful job in proving that this information belongs to you, this will allow them to establish timelines and prove your guilt.
